Fishing Run Restoration/Maude Mine Reclamation

Initial Site Visit winter 2006. The project location is not even recognizable compared to the present day.

Area just outside of the open mine shaft, Fishing Run can be seen in the lower right portion of the photo

Delapidated rusted minig structures were dismantled and slavaged for scrap.

Partial Fishing Run stream channel restoration April 2007

Sealing of the Maude Mine portal on May 2nd 2007

Concrete was used to seal the mine entrance

Getting concrete to the site wasn't easy

Concrete was taken to the entrance of the mine one scoop at a time

Worker's complete the seal by hand

Completed seal of the mine entrance

The sealed entrance to the mine is no longer visible in July 2007

A new mine seep was discovered during construction at a previously sealed portal

After water quality testing was performed, it was determined that the seepage could be directed into the stream channel with minimal impact

The water turns orange as iron precipitates out when the water from inside the mine comes into contact with the air outside of the mine

Fishing Run meanders through the woods below the project location.

There is no iron in the water by the time Fishing Run crosses under Millers Run Road and into Millers Run Creek

Erosion that ocurred over the winter of 2007/2008 is being repaired

Gabion baskets will be used to prevent erosion in the future.

In order to ensure the long term success of the project, all of the project partners worked together to fund and repair the erosion damage.

May 2nd, the repairs continue

May 24, 2008 the repairs are complete. The baskets will prevent erosion and slow the flow of the water from the upper to the lower stream channel

Planting of 4000 trees for stream bank stabilization and riparian buffer establishment took place on April 26, 2008

Pussy Willows in the upper channel thrive despite the fact that a segment of the upper stream channel is fed only by stormwater runoff

Close up of a Pussy Willow

Tadpoles have hatched in the far reaches of the upper stream channel where the stream flow is low but constant

The Black Willows in the coir logs are also leafing out.

A constant flow of water from the underground mine shaft benefits the plants along the lower stream channel.

The Black Willows along the lower stream channel are doing very well.

Dut to the recent heavy rains, the upper stream channel has a steady flow of water on May 11, 2008.

The Pussy Willows two weeks post planting day.
