Little Lions' Academy
Every summer members of the South Fayette Conservation Group teach a class during the South Fayette School Districts Little Lions' Academy. The theme of the class for the past few years has been the Wonderful World of Wetland Science. In this class, students learn about the importance of wetlands.
Topics include the importance of wetlands in storm water management, the filtration capabilities of wetlands, plant and animal communities found within wetlands as well as the geology of wetlands. During the five day program students enjoy skimming the ponds for macroinvertebrates, collecting unique rocks for identification, learning about non-native invasive plant species, building birdhouses and much more.
A highlight of every year is a live animal demonstration by Ms. Verna. She always brings a wide variety of creatures, most of which can be held by the students. Past students have also constructed their own watershed models and have tie-dyed t-shirts using pigments recovered from abandoned mine discharge settlement ponds.
